—————————— TIME FOR YOU TO SPEAK UP!!! At the height of this crisis, on August 3, Elinor Caplan was appointed Immigration Minister. Her maiden speech was apparently meant to “shame” Canadians into line: “Canadians need to learn more from their government about immigrant’s contributions to the country. … ‘I think there’s a lot of confusion and it’s difficult to engage the public in discussion around the importance around immigration.'” (Globe and Mail, Thursday August 5, 1999) We’re NOT Confused The immigrants WE honour are those who managed to build a nation from the rawest of raw materials. They broke their backs and destroyed their health pulling stumps and rocks from unyielding ground.

They suffered Canadian winters and sweltered through the summers to bring in the crops. When the crops failed, they starved. They stayed up with calving cows and the men went away to send money home. Sometimes the women went mad from isolation, privation, and fear. Multiple marriages were frequent: people weren’t “experimenting” – they died. And when they were only injured, it only made the work harder, because they could never, ever, stop. In childbirth, they could only pray that the baby would survive. These aren’t isolated instances.

These aren’t the exaggerations of Hollywood: the same impossible conditions were surmounted, and the same scenes played out again and again, right across the land. It was only later, when they died prematurely, that they were freed of their labours at last. The gnarled, calloused and arthric hands crossed over their chest, bore mute testimony to a lifetime of unrelenting hardship. No, Canadians are NOT confused about the contributions immigrants make. ___________________

Your mother probably told you that “there’s a little good in everything.” This invasion has ripped the discourse on immigration away from the “expert” class of immigration lawyers, lobbyists, minority pressure groups, ESL curriculum advisors, immigration bureaucrats, refugee settlement workers, ad nauseum – and put it back where it belongs – in the hands of the Canadian people. So much so, that it’s beginning to resemble a healthy society, where important issues are open to debate. In that sense, this invasion has brought us nearer participatory democracy than we have been for a long, long time – ____________________

Benoit said refugee claimants entering Canada under suspicious circumstances should be detained until their identification is verified, or until they have a hearing. Deportation orders for rejected refugees should be issued immediately, he added.
